TEMA E VARIAZIONI

On November 9,1832, at the age of ten years, Alfredo Piatti was admitted free of charge to the Royal Conservatory of Milan, into the class of Vincenzo Merighi. Five years later, as Vittorio Camplani narrates: "he graduated from the Conservatory in September, 1837, and the note in the register simply states that 'he executed a piece of his own composition that was highly applauded by everyone... his prize was a cello.' It was a fine instrument made by Pietro Giacomo Ruggeri of Brescia, and who knows what happened to it during the young and adventurous life of the artist." The piece that the young Alfredo Piatti triumphantly performed that day was the "Theme and Variations" for cello and orchestra, his first composition.
